It is one of the first questions people ask about FIFO work. The short answer is that most FIFO employers do cover flights to and from site, but the details depend on the role and your contract.
What is usually covered
For most WA mining and construction FIFO roles, the employer books and pays for return flights between site and an agreed departure point, usually Perth or a major regional airport.
Where the details vary
- Point of hire: some roles only fly from Perth, others from regional hubs
- Interstate travel to Perth may or may not be included
- Contractors are sometimes responsible for part of their travel
- Travel time may be paid, partly paid or unpaid
Questions to ask before you accept
- Which airport is my point of hire?
- Who books the flights, and how far in advance?
- Is travel time paid?
- Are accommodation and meals on site included?
Get it in writing
Make sure your contract or letter of offer spells out the travel arrangements. If anything is unclear, your recruitment consultant can confirm the details with the employer before you start.
