Knowing when and how to ask for more money is an important part of managing your career. Here is a practical approach for Australian workplaces.
How often is reasonable?
Many employers review pay once a year, often around performance reviews or the new financial year. Asking for a review annually is reasonable; outside that cycle, a promotion or a significant change in responsibilities is a good reason to raise it.
Know your award or agreement
If you are covered by a modern award or enterprise agreement, check the minimum rates and any scheduled increases. The Fair Work Ombudsman website is a good starting point.
Do your research
Look at current market rates for your role, location and experience. Salary guides and conversations with recruitment consultants can give you a realistic range.
Build your case
- Achievements and results since your last review
- Extra responsibilities you have taken on
- Skills or qualifications you have gained
- How your pay compares with the market
Have the conversation
Book a dedicated time with your manager, keep it positive and specific, and suggest a figure based on your research. If the answer is not yet, ask what you would need to achieve and agree on a time to revisit it.
